Bridging Communities through Engineering
In December 2024, Engineers Without Borders – Sri Lanka brought together global experts, academics, and community leaders for the International Symposium on Community Engagement in Engineering in Kandy. Held in parallel with ICSBE 2024, this event spotlighted the power of inclusive engineering to solve real-world problems.
Through this symposium, participants explored topics like humanitarian engineering, disaster resilience, WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), and education for sustainable development. This served as a call to action — reminding engineers that their most powerful tools are empathy, innovation, and collaboration with the communities they serve.
💬 “Engineering solutions must start with the people who need them the most.” – Prof. Ranjith Dissanayake
As part of the lead-up to ICSBE 2024, Engineers Without Borders – Sri Lanka hosted a powerful pre-conference webinar on 10th October 2024, uniting thought leaders to explore the human side of engineering.
Webinar Spotlight: Community Engagement in Engineering
Prof. Stephen Schensul (University of Connecticut, USA) and A/Prof. Shameen Jinadasa (Central Queensland University, Australia) shared valuable insights on how engineers can work with communities to co-create sustainable solutions. Moderated by Dr. Shyanaka Rathnayaka, the session emphasized the importance of empathy, inclusion, and long-term partnership in engineering practice.
🎓 “This webinar reminded us that technical solutions must be rooted in trust, dialogue, and deep understanding of community needs.”
With over 100 participants and global collaboration, the event reinforced EWB-SL’s mission: engineering that empowers people.
Pitigoda Bridge: Connecting Hope
When the river that runs through Pitigoda became too dangerous to cross during monsoon seasons, children missed school, farmers lost access to markets, and villages felt isolated. In partnership with community members, Engineers Without Borders – Sri Lanka designed and built a safe, sturdy footbridge spanning that same river — linking 8 villages and renewing daily life.
Today, over 300 residents walk across it every day — returning children to school and enabling goods to flow once again.
💬“This bridge didn’t just connect our village — it brought our lives back together.” — One grateful villager from Pitigoda

Karawwa Suspension Bridge: Engineering UnityIn Karawwa, Ratnapura district, rural communities struggled for decades with an unreliable river crossing—limiting access to schools, healthcare, and markets. Engineers Without Borders – Sri Lanka partnered with EWB KIT Germany to design and build a sturdy 30‑meter suspension bridge, complete with 6‑meter-tall pylons and 12‑meter-long ramps
Now, families, students, and vendors confidently cross every day, regardless of weather, reconnecting villages and livelihoods.
“We no longer worry about the river—this bridge brings our community together, rain or shine.” — Karawwa villager -

Lankaponics: Sustainable Farming in PadiyathalawaIn the dry zone of eastern Sri Lanka, conventional farming struggled with water scarcity and soil degradation. To tackle this, Engineers Without Borders – Sri Lanka partnered with EWB Karlsruhe (KIT) to introduce a pioneering aquaponics system — where fish and vegetable production thrive together in a low-water, nutrient-sharing cycle.
Though faced with challenges in water supply and long-term maintenance, the project empowered local farmers and volunteers through skills training, hands-on workshops, and a shared vision of sustainable agriculture .
“This system showed us there’s a way to grow even with little water — now we dream bigger.” — Local farmer in Padiyathalawa -

Pitigoda Bridge Renovation: Restoring LifelinesAfter years of service, the Pitigoda pedestrian suspension bridge began showing signs of wear—threatening the safe passage of over 300 residents who rely on it daily. Engineers Without Borders – Sri Lanka, in collaboration with local volunteers and EWB KIT Germany, led a renovation in 2024 to reinforce structural components, refurbish decking, and restore the river connection.
Rebuilt with community participation and upgraded materials, the renovated bridge is now safer, stronger, and built to last—reaffirming the village's connection to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
“Seeing the renewed bridge stand strong again gives our whole village peace of mind.” — Local resident in Pitigoda -

Eluthumadduval Bakery: Empowering Through EntrepreneurshipIn Eluthumadduval, local residents dreamed of launching a community-run bakery to boost livelihoods and create economic opportunities. Engineers Without Borders – Sri Lanka partnered with village leaders and volunteers to design, construct, and equip the bakery with modern ovens, baking tools, and training sessions.
Now operational, the bakery serves freshly baked goods to local families and generates income, empowering women and young entrepreneurs. It’s more than food—it’s a catalyst for sustainable growth.
“This bakery changed how we see our future—we can earn, learn, and grow together.” — Eluthumadduval community member
