Pitigoda Bridge Renovation
The rehabilitation and maintenance of the damaged bridge in Pitigoda, near Kandy, was undertaken as a joint effort with the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) team from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. The aim was to ensure the long-term usability of the bridge for the local community.
Due to the bridge’s age and exposure to seasonal weather changes, the wooden decking had severely deteriorated, posing safety risks. Our goal was to restore the bridge to allow villagers to safely cross the Ma Oya River at any water level, enabling daily activities to continue without disruption.
Guided by the original 2009 plans and supported by creative problem-solving, the team developed a renovation strategy. However, on-site challenges required practical, spontaneous adaptations to ensure effective implementation. The responsibility for maintaining the structure remains with each team, ensuring the bridge continues to serve the community for years to come.
